Office 2007 Delay? Actually, No.

There has been a lot of confusion over the announcement that Office 2007 would also reschedule its consumer launch date to January 2007 to match that of Vista.  This marketing launch is a different animal than the development and availability date of the Office 2007 product(s).

Microsoft clarifies this with a press release that reads as follows:

Microsoft Confirms Timeline for 2007 Microsoft Office System
Product on track for October RTM.

REDMOND, Wash. — March 24, 2006 — Yesterday, Microsoft Corp. confirmed the timeline for release and availability of its 2007 Microsoft® Office system. The company remains on track to complete work on the 2007 Microsoft Office system in October of this year and is planning to make the product available to the business customers through the volume licensing program in October 2006. Retail and OEM availability of the product are scheduled to coincide with the retail and OEM availability of the Windows Vista™ operating system in January 2007.

It has been stated that Beta 2 will be available in June, and the above press release specifies October as the RTM and bits available date.  Rock on!

MS Office 2007 Beta 1 Technical Refresh

As usual, I’ve been too busy rfeading other blog posts about the recent announcements, sleeping, or traveling to visit customers to be one of the first to talk to you about the new “Refresh”-ed version of Beta 1.

The Non-Disclosure period for many of the Server-side functions that have not already been announced is going to be expiring in the next week or so.  It’ll be great to be able to talk in more detail about the server-side pieces of SharePoint Server 2007.  In the meantime, if you want to start looking up more details about the next version, you can start with this list of blog entries…

January Webcasts of Interest

The blog has been quiet for a while.  I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas, and best wishes for a most excellent 2006.

To start the year off the right way, here’s a list of SharePoint and collaboration webcasts coming up in January…

NW SharePoint users group

Jason Mauer and I presented the debut session of a Office Server Workshop this afternoon in Bellevue.  We played to a packed house (well, there were a few empty seats) of 45 and had a good time exploring some pieces of Office “12” Server.  I’d like to take a minute again to point everyone to the PDC 05 recorded content that is still available online.  I think it is supposed to be available until March or so. (6 months from PDC, right?)  I think that is still the best way to get an introduction to Office “12” Server.  That is, if you can’t make it to our Portland edition of this presentation, next week, Dec 13th…  Another good way is probably to check out http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview.
